Cardinal Lake is the creative vehicle of brothers Charlie and Joseph Campbell. The band is an indie rock outfit from Asheville, NC embodying themes of Kerouac-Americana with a DIY-punk aesthetic centering folk-rock vocal harmonies – all on top of jazz-influenced chordal structures. Progressive, but not for the sake of being progressive. DIY but not lo-fi. Analog warmth with improvisational imperfection. Pop sensibilities amidst controlled chaos. Our music is intended to expand minds and open hearts, subverting norms while speaking to the universal human condition.
Though Charlie and Joseph have been performing together under various names since 2008, Cardinal Lake formed in the suburban Atlanta neighborhood of the same name. Quickly, the brothers moved base of operations to the vibrant scene in Athens, GA where they gigged for a few years as a three-piece under the names Tuco & Blondie and Tucson Blonde. 2020 took the band to Asheville for a fresh start and a chance to finally have all members co-located, and in 2021, Cardinal Lake released their first LP, Goodbye Cardinal Lake, and resumed live performance after a lengthy Covid-hiatus. The band plans to make up for lost time by gigging the new material as much as possible over the coming year.
